The $300 million in new money for local government must be spent by September next year, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says.
Mr Rudd told the inaugural Australian Council of Local Government meeting the money is the next phase of the government's economic stimulus strategy and follows the $10.4 billion announced last month.
"But it is only the beginning. The purpose of this action is to build local infrastructure and to help support local economies and jobs during the global financial crisis," Mr Rudd said.
The money would be available under the Regional and Local Infrastructure Program to Australia's 565 local council areas and will be allocated by the end of June next year.
Councils will be able to apply for funding to build or to repair existing public parks, town halls, community centres, swimming pools, sports grounds, libraries and tourism infrastructure.
Mr Rudd said he expected thousands of jobs to be created for skilled tradespeople, engineers and administrators.
The program would be delivered in two stages with $250 million used to deliver grants of at least $100,000 to councils with fewer than 5,000 people and up to $2.9 million for the largest councils.
Mr Rudd said the remaining $50 million would be for strategic community infrastructure projects needing larger-scale funding such as sports stadia or swimming pools with a minimum allocation of $2 million.
Councils will be required to submit proposals for funding.
i just got back from skating at zillmere skate park , it's a shitty little pre fab park but this has been the 1st day it hasnt rained in 4 or 5 days so i just went , im glad i did go down to zillmere because i read pottys post above and as i looked at the park i noticed (its not hard to see) the place is fuck , not only from a design point of veiw but it's just falling apart . As it is a cheap pre fab set up its built with screws... (but not any type of screw head iv ever seen and i guess the reason they build the park with one of a kind screws is so if the park needs maintness you have to get the company that made it to fix it , inturn earning them more money.) ...and these screw are hanging out all over the place . i just imagen falling down the bank and having a screw take a chunk out of my arm or some little going home in the same situation and the place getting ripped down (wich might not be a bad idear) and/or they sue and it hinders skate parks getting built. other things are fucked at the park as well .
so, as i have done this kinda thing before, i will do it again for free and to just help skating .the park could be good and my goal is to not only fix the hazards but to get the park fully inproved on .
